Personality traits make Harry and Sally fun when prudent meets peppy in Reiner’s newest comedy

By Wendy Neese

Can men and women really be friends or does the sex-part have to get in the way? “When Harry Met Sally” examines this and other questions in a fashion common only to Rob Reiner films.

Billy Crystal plays Harry. Harry’s a guy with a lot of vigor, a touch of humility and little patience. He has a knack for getting under the skin of uptight, prudent people. Enter Sally- a very prudent and uptight person.

When Harry and Sally “meet” in 1977, the clash of the personalities begin. Even though the storyline follows the typical boy meets girl, boy has conflict with girl, boy resolves conflict, the character’s antics make the film well worth seeing.

Sally is played by Meg Ryan. She’s a bit conservative, but even so, she’ll shock the audience at times with her uncontrollable spontaneity.

Another aspect that makes the film different from the typical love story comes from the addition of Harry and Sally’s side-kick best friends. They add another dimension to dealing with relationships, which is what this movie is all about.

Along with this, the camera work adds an extra kick. The use of a divided screen allows the audience to see simultaneuous conversations.

Since the movie spans over 12 years in the lives of Harry and Sally, it allows for flexiblity as to the different changes in their lives. Yet, this could also be a flaw. The audience doesn’t have time to get close to the character’s development.

Either way,”When Harry Met Sally” is a definite movie to see.
