Creative Arts Center offers opportunity to learn crafts

Classes at the Creative Arts Center and Photography Lab provide students with an opportunity to learn a craft or skill they might otherwise not get a chance to learn.

“No class credit is given for these classes; they are purely for fun and enjoyment,” said Kristin Kaduce, graduate staff assistant for the center.

Ten different classes are offered each semester, including drawing, calligraphy, woodworking, jewelry making, ceramics, matting and framing, two levels of photography, printing and drying, printmaking and knitting. Classes are held one night a week and last from six to nine weeks.

There is a $10 to $40 fee charged for each class, which pays for the use of the facility and the instructor and provides some of the needed class materials. Kaduce said the center is looking for more instructors for the spring semester.

“Student fees are paying for the Creative Arts Center so students should know that it’s available to them. It’s a great opportunity that shouldn’t be missed,” Kaduce said.

Students do not have to take a class in order to use the center. They only need to show a student ID and meet any requirements, such as passing a safety test, in order to use the woodworking equipment.

Kaduce said students must supply their own materials and are responsible for cleanup. The center, located in the Recreation Center, is open Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Fridays from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

An open house will be held Nov. 30 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. in the lobby of the rec center. Students are encouraged to view projects at the open house that other students have done and to sign up for classes.
