Parking Committee to discuss lot repairs

The NIU Parking Committee will discuss necessary repairs for the College of Engineering’s parking lot at the committee’s regular meeting today at 2 p.m. in room 105 of the Art Building.

The committee discussed at its Oct. 20 meeting whether the college’s lot, which is located in Sycamore, needed repairs before the arrival of inclement winter weather. The discussion was prompted by a letter from the dean of engineering and engineering technology, Romualdas Kasuba, which states that sections of the lot are in poor condition.

Parking Committee Chairman Bob Bornhuetter said the minutes from the Oct. 20 meeting state that he asked NIU Comptroller Robert Albanese to make arrangements for the repairs.

However, Albanese said Wednesday that he believes the proposal of repairs still is in discussion; therefore, no actions have been taken to make the repairs.

Bornhuetter said he gave “the go-ahead” to make repairs on the lot and because the repairs were a “money matter,” he asked Albanese to make the arrangements. He said he assumed the repairs were made because the engineering school has not contacted him with further complaints.

Ralph Wallis, engineering college business manager, said there have not been any repairs made yet and that he has not heard from the university whether any repairs would be made.

Areas of the lot are in poor condition and fail to drain water, Wallis said. “They’re not the most pleasant thing to walk through when it rains.”

Wallis also said that the condition of the lots only will worsen when the weather turns colder. “I hope they at least put down some gravel or something,” he said.

Lynn Fraser, NIU Parking Division manager, said plans are underway for the repairs. “But to my knowledge, (the university) has not yet gone in and improved the site.”

In other business, Bornhuetter said the committee will discuss a petition from university janitors to change parking lots 37W, 38 and 39 to 24-hour faculty/staff parking.

About 55 janitors signed a petition of complaint against students who are parking in the lots between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., Bornhuetter said. He said the students are leaving few spaces for the janitors to park in.

The committee also might discuss progress on subcommittee studies which were established at the last meeting.

A subcommittee was established on Oct. 20 for a three-month study on whether the parking division needs a new facility.
