Bus trip offered to NIU students

Where the Huskie football team goes, so go NIU students.

At least that is what Mark Shafer, travel coordinator for Campus Activities Board, and athletic administrators are hoping for.

It was recommended to Shafer that he plan a chartered bus trip for Huskie fans to attend an away game. Shafer decided the Oct. 22 match up between NIU and Southern Illinois would be perfect for two reasons.

“Southern was picked because it is not far like some of the other away games,” Shafer said, “and it’s their homecoming weekend. People will probably have a lot of friends there.”

The cost of the trip is $28 for just the bus ride or $35 for the transportation and a ticket to the game.

“I talked with people in athletics, and they thought the price was reasonable,” Shafer said. “Compared to a round-trip Greyhound (bus fare), ours is $45 less, so a lot of interest is expected.”

It is tentatively scheduled for the bus to leave DeKalb around 5 a.m. for the 4 p.m. contest. Because it is SIU’s homecoming, hotel rooms could not be reserved and the bus will leave Carbondale, Ill., at 1 a.m.

“Since it is a chartered bus people can sleep comfortably, and there is a bathroom on the bus,” Shafer said.

Although Shafer said a minimum of 35 people need to sign up for the scheduled journey, the maximum the bus will hold is 45.

“We might look into another bus if we need to,” Shafer said, “but it is hard to book another one on such short notice.”

Anyone interested in the trip may call the CAB office at 3-1580 or stop by the office, which is located in the basement of the Holmes Student Center.
