Coroner’s jury rules NIU student’s death accidental

The death of NIU student Karri Botz, 17, was ruled accidental by a DeKalb County Coroner’s jury Oct. 25.

Botz was killed Sept. 17 when she was struck by a motorcycle then an automobile on Annie Glidden Road, just north of Crane Drive.

DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said Botz was killed by the impact of the car, which was driven by Kent House, 24, of Monroe Center. “The motorcycle did not actually kill her,” he said.

Miller said an autopsy revealed that Botz died from “severe loss of blood.”

He said an autopsy was “very important” in this case in order to prove which vehicle killed Botz. Miller said neither the motorcylce driver nor the driver of the car were at fault in the accident. “She was at the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said.

The autopsy also revealed that Botz, who had been drinking at a party in the Greek Row area prior to the accident, had a blood alcohol concentration level of .05. This is “well below the legal level of .10,” Miller said.
