By Dan Young

NIU’s College of Education has been conducting a national search for the position of assistant dean and expects to make a final choice sometime in November.

“We opened up the position due to the upcoming retirement of Assistant Dean Dr. Robert Karibinus, which will be Dec. 31,” said Dean Charles Stegman.

Letters were sent to about 200 universities and there have been advertisements placed in national education magazines to ensure that the search spanned the nation, Stegman said.

The closing date for applications is Oct. 7, after which a committee will conduct a preliminary screening of the applicants. The person selected will take the position Jan. 1, 1989.

The assistant dean has a number of responsibilities, including acting as co-director of the College Office of Research, Evaluation and Policy Studies and conducting studies to support planning and decision-making.

As co-director of the College Office of Research, Evaluation and Policy Studies, the assistant dean’s main duty is to develop, implement and monitor policies and procedures which promote and foster research and grant productvity.

The assistant dean is in charge of the College’s information system and conducts studies which support college planning, policy formation and decision-making.

Additionally, the assistant dean might represent the dean’s office in selected student matters, such as, serving as the dean’s office representative in student grievance or appeal activities.

Applicants are expected to have an earned doctorate and scholarly productivity in a field appropriate for faculty appointment within the college and possess administrative leadership skills.
