Meet pleases Cesarek

When a coach splits up her team for intrasquad competition and the final scores are 150 to 150.1, you can bet the teams were pretty even.

“I made a good guess,” said NIU women’s gynmastic coach Bobbie Cesarek of her choices in splitting the team into two squads, Cardinal and Black.

The intrasquad meet was held Wednesday night to give the gymnasts an opportunity to compete before the end of the semester. Cesarek said she really was not surprised with the results, but she is glad the girls had a chance to practice some of their new routines, some of which were just choreographed last week.

“It’s nice to have the first one under the belt, and say ‘OK, I know I can do it under pressure,’‘’ Cesarek said. “This was a nice chance for people like Julie (Wimmers), Amy (Taylor), Gretchen(Kind) and Martha (Unger) to show their new routines. I thought Bethann Holland did a wonderful job.”

The Black squad won, with Wimmers and Taylor leading the scores for its team in vaulting with a 9.1 and 9.0, respectively. Holleran tied Taylor’s 9.0 in vaulting for the Cardinals, and was closely followed by teammate Kind, who scored an 8.9

Wimmers was dominant on the uneven bars, scoring a 9.1, and Taylor led all gymnasts on the balance beam with an 8.8. Tina Agostino and Michelle Rawlake were next in line for the Black squad on the beam, both earning an 8.6.

Unger and King prevailed for the the Cardinals in the floor exercise with a 9.2 and 9.0 respectively. Holleran and Angie Tasetano trailed close behind with an 8.9.

“We’ve got a team that shows that we’re all about the same level–it shows we have a team with depth,” Cesarek said. “I’m really pleased that we only had one score in the 7’s”.

The Huskies will take a break for the semester to study for finals, but will be back Jan. 6 to work out and prepare for their road trip to Ball State Jan. 17.

Cesarek said she feels confident about the chances of defeating the Cardinals, because NIU has beaten Ball State consistently.

“If we don’t beat them up, we’ll be very, very, disappointed,” Cesarek said. “We’ve beaten them consistently”.

“We have lots of polishing up to do, and we hope to peak later in March, or early April,” Cesarek said. “We have skills that we have not put in as of yet. I’m looking forward to the season. I can only see us getting better.”
