Model hopefuls can audition for FIO fashion show

Model hopefuls will get their “chance of a lifetime” at modeling auditions sponsored by NIU’s Fashion Industries Organization tonight.

The organization will hold auditions for its annual fashion show, “Elements of Style,” in Wirtz Auditorium at 9 p.m.

The show, to be held in February, has been an event since 1979, FIO President Anne Leakey said. She said this year’s event will feature special guest designer and NIU graduate Wilson Harris III, one of this season’s top designers of the Chicago area.

arris recently has been featured in one of the United State’s leading black magazines, Leakey said.

Models for the program will be chosen by FIO board members, Harris, and a group of Harris’ advisaries, Leakey said. She said anyone interested, male or female, is welcome to audition.

Leaky said requirements for those auditioning are to wear fashionable attire and for women to wear high heeled shoes. She said no flat shoes will be allowed because models will need to wear heels in the show. Also, judges must be able to see how well entrants are able to walk in high heeled shoes before the show.

In addition, all entrants must bring a photo with them, Leakey said. She said any picture would do.

Leakey said judging will be based on five criteria—walking technique, posture, creativity, stage presence and confidence.

In addition to designs by Harris, designs by NIU students will be featured, Leakey said. She said any students are welcome to submit their designs, be they earrings, bathing suits or ball gowns.

Leakey said FIO encourages anyone who has ever designed anything to submit their work for the show, because FIO wants to show the Chicagoland area all the talent NIU has in fashion.

Designs must be submitted by Jan. 19, and Leakey will be accepting sketches during the model auditioning tonight.

The show will be Leakey’s second, and her first while serving as president of FIO. She said she probably will serve as Master of Ceremonies at the event, and one of her own designs will be among those shown.
