More credit due

I‘d like to correct the impression created by Wednesday’s story on Jesse Jackson’s visit to NIU. When I was interviewed about Jesse Jackson, the reporter asked me how Rev. Jackson was approached and asked to speak at NIU. What I told the reporter, which was omitted from the story, was that Howard Brookens Jr., a member of the Minority Graduate Student Association, who is the son of State Sen. Howard Brookens Sr., a personal friend of Rev. Jackson’s, extended a personal invitation to Rev. Jackson to speak at NIU. Because of this invitation, the CAB Speakers Committee was able to bring Rev. Jackson for an extremely reduced honorarium. In Wednesday’s story about Rev. Jackson, the MGSA and the Black Student Union were slighted. It should be made clear that the MGSA and the BSU are an integral and vital part of the working coalition formed to bring Jesse Jackson to NIU this Saturday.
