Men’s tennis prepares to MAC Championship against familiar foe

DeKALB — After closing out the regular season with an 11-11 overall and 3-4 conference records, the men’s tennis team will face Binghamton University in the Mid-American Conference Championship Quarterfinals 9 a.m. Friday. in Kalamazoo, MI. 
 
NIU had a season full of ups and downs that included a six-game winning streak and a four-game losing streak. The Huskies’ final regular season match was a 6-1 victory over the University of Toledo to get them back to .500.
 
Binghamton struggled this season, finishing with an 8-14 record. In conference play, it went winless, as it heads into Friday’s matchup on a seven-game MAC losing streak. 
 
Their last win came March 9 when the Bearcats took down Colgate University 5-2. Binghamton finished last in the MAC.
 
NIU finished third in the MAC, including a 6-2 home record. It struggled a bit in conference play, going 3-4; however, NIU finished off the season winning three of its last five MAC contests. 
 
The Huskies finished third in the MAC behind the University of Buffalo and Western Michigan University, leading the pack with a perfect 7-0 conference record.
 
History has been on NIU’s side in its previous seven matches against Binghamton. 
 
The Huskies have a 6-1 record against the Bearcats, including a 6-1 victor March 21. The Huskies will enter with a five-game winning streak averaging 4 points per matchups against Binghamton.
 
The first round match begins 9 a.m. Friday in  Kalamazoo, Michigan.
