Men’s tennis falls 2-5 to Buffalo

DeKALB — Men’s tennis was defeated 2-5 Sunday by the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, New York.

First-year David Pata and junior Bor Schweiger Muzar defeated sophomore Nickolas Frisk and junior Vilhelm Fridell in a 6-4 win to open doubles play. That would be the only doubles match win for NIU.

First-year Mikko Malinen and sophomore Victor Spolidorio fell to junior Hao Sheng Koay and senior Ethan Nittolo. The duos battled in a hard-fought 6-7 Bufalo victory.

Seniors Eric Marbach and Erich Schuette fell to sophomores Matthew Johnson and Valdemar Holm 2-6, giving the Bulls the double’s point and the early lead.

The Huskies dropped the first four singles matches against Buffalo, before they grabbed a win in the final two matches. NIU’s wins weren’t enough as the meet winner was already decided by that time.

Junior Shao-Yu Yu was defeated by Johnson in two sets, 4-6, 1-6.

Pata went down in three sets to Fridell after making a comeback in the second set. The sets went 2-6, 6-1 and 1-6.

Malinen was defeated 5-7, 4-6 by Frisk in two sets, clinching the match victory for Buffalo.

Muzar was defeated by Koay in three sets. Muzar won the first set 6-3, but fell in the final two, 0-6, 3-6.

Marbach gave NIU it’s first point of the day, with a tough win over Nittolo. The Huskie won in two sets 7-6, 7-5.

Spolidorio won the final match of the day for NIU against first-year Simon Wibler. Their match went into three sets 6-3, 3-6 and 6-4.

With the loss, NIU’s overall record drops below .500 at 10-11 on the season and 2-4 in Mid-American Conference play. The Huskies will return to the court 1 p.m. Sunday in Toledo, Ohio to close out the regular season against the University of Toledo.
