Men’s tennis grabs 6-1 victory to close out regular season

DeKALB — Men’s tennis defeated the University of Toledo Rockets Sunday in Toledo, Ohio. NIU won the MId-American Conference matchup by a score of 6-1 in its final regular season meet.

First-year David Pata and junior Bor Schweiger Muzar defeated junior Danilo Vukotic and senior Vince Anzalone by score of 6-3 to take the first doubles match.

First-year Mikko Malinen and sophomore Victor Spolidorio defeated seniors Luka Vitosevic and Omar Espinosa by a score of 7-5 to take the the doubles point and give NIU an early 1-0 lead.

Seniors Eric Marbach and Erich Schuette fell to senior Juan Carranza and first-year Cole Shoults, after the doubles point was decided, by a score of 3-6 to close doubles play .

The Huskies carried their hot start into singles play, claiming five of the six individual matches.

Marbach was defeated by Vitosevic 5-7, 4-6 in two sets. It would be the first point for the Rockets and the lone singles match NIU would drop.

Muzar gave NIU its first singles point of the day, quickly defeating Vukotic in two sets, going 6-2 and 6-1. With the victory, NIU took back the slight 2-1 advantage.

Pata defeated Anzalone in two sets 6-2, 6-2 to give the Huskies their second singles point.

Sophomore Kristopher Ortega defeated Espinosa in three sets to prevent a Rocket comeback win. The sets went 7-6, 5-7 and 10-7 as NIU clinched the meet victory at 4-1.

The Huskies recorded two more victories on the afternoon. Malinen defeated junior Thawin Suksathaporn in two sets, going 7-5 and 6-2. Spolidorio defeated senior Serjen Olmedo in two sets 7-5, 7-6 to close singles play and the event.

With the win, NIU’s record improves to 11-11 on the season and 3-4 in MAC play. The Huskies will return to the court 9 a.m. Friday against Binghamton University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to kick-off the 2019 MAC Championships.
