Upcoming Egyptian Theatre Events: February 15-28

Feb. 15: Dolly, Patsy and Loretta: The Legendary Ladies of Country Music

Three of the greatest women in the history of country music will be brought to life for the citizens of DeKalb. All three came from humble beginnings to create some of the greatest songs which have a profound impact on popular culture. Hits such as Parton’s “9 to 5,” “I Will Always Love You,” Cline’s “Sweet Dreams,” “I Fall to Pieces” and Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter” are all expected to appear. The event will take place 8 p.m. at The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second Street, with ticket cost ranging from $22 to $47.

Feb. 16: Jon Secada

Two time Grammy winner Jon Secada will bring to DeKalb his Latin influenced music. Secada is well-known for his hit songs “Angel,” “If You Go” and several more. He has also been in several Broadway musicals as well as worked with Jennifer Lopez, Olivia Newton John and Frank Sinatra. He will perform at 7:30 p.m. at The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second Street. Ticket prices range from $30 to $75.

Feb. 19: “Dances With Wolves”

As part of the Best Director Film Series, “Dances With Wolves” will be screened in preparation for the 91st Academy Awards on Feb. 24th. The films stars Kevin Costner as an American Soldier who adapts to life on the western prairies during the Civil War. Besides garnering the Best Director Oscar, the film won six additional statues including for Best Cinematography, Best Director and Best Picture. The film will be screened at 7 p.m. at The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second Street. Tickets cost $8.

Feb. 21: “Cheshire, Ohio”

The documentary is an American coal story that follows a community devastated by coal, starting with American Electric Power’s buyout and bulldozing of the Ohio River town, after exposing the town to years of harmful emissions. The film is free to the general public and will be screened at 7 p.m. at The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second Street.

Feb. 22: “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”

The cult classic returns for its spring season. Featuring a shadow cast comprised of The Irrational Masters Shadowcast, the film will be an experience unlike any other. Costumes are encouraged and prop packs will be sold for $5 to enhance the experience. The film will be screened at 8 p.m. at The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second Street. Tickets cost $10.

Feb. 23: The Second City: It’s Not You, It’s Me

The comedy company will host a Valentine’s related event with comedians taking shots at human behavior. Many of these comedians are the future of comedy and seeing them perform is a glimpse into what comedy is and what it will become. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. at The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second Street. Ticket prices range from $17 to $45.

Feb. 24: Transformation Through Rhythm 

The DeKalb High School Percussion Ensemble, the Northern Illinois University Percussion Ensemble and the Harambee African Percussion Ensemble will all explore the art of African drumming circles. The event will be held in support of Northwestern Medicine Hospice with free admission for all. The event will begin at 2 p.m. at The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second Street.

 Feb. 26: “The Hurt Locker”

The final film in the Best Director Film Series will be the critically acclaimed war film set during The Iraq War. With an all star cast including Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie and Ralph Fiennes, the film won six Oscars including Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. Kathryn Bigelow’s Best Director win marked the first time a woman has won this award. The film will be screened at 7 p.m. at The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second Street. Tickets cost $8.

Feb. 28: “Life Animated”

The film is the inspirational story of Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films. The film is free to the general public and will be screened at 7 p.m. at The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second Street.
