Gymnastics records highest score of the season

The gymnastics team won Sunday against the Ball State University Cardinals in a head-to-head meet to improve to 10-3 on the season.The Huskies outscored the Cardinals 195.700-194.700,  resulting in their highest-scoring meet of the season and helping them tie for the sixth-highest total in school history.

“Last week we came close and today we kept getting better as the day progressed,” Morreale said to NIU Athletics.“Everyone worked really hard on being consistent, and they trust each other to get the job done.”

NIU started out slow on uneven parallel bars, with a score of 48.900 just under the Cardinals score of 49.125 overall. First-year Morgan Hooper tied for first with graduate student Jordyn Penny and junior Maddie MacDonald scoring a 9.875.

On Vault, sophomore Gabby Welch tied for fourth with with Ball State senior Sydney Finke with a score of 9.800. The Huskies posted high scores but Ball State placed first, second and third in the event.The event ended with Huskies and Cardinals having overall scores of 97.725 and 98.200 respectively.

The Huskies moved on to their strongest event, the floor exercise . The team finished with a score of 49.425 to break its floor record for the second time this season.. Senior Anna Martucci placed first scoring a season-high of 9.950, helping the Huskies’ break their previous floor record of 49.375.

“We knocked it out of the park on floor,” Morreale said. “It’s no secret that’s one of our best events, and the floor team is not done. They are driven to be even better. Today, we tumbled really well. Anna was outstanding like she always is, we’ve come to expect those kind of routines from her.”

The Huskies’ last event, balance beam helped them come out on top in the end. Sophomore Mia Lord led the team, placing second with a score of 9.775, just under Penny who scored a 9.800. The Huskies finished the last event with an overall score of 195.700,  tied for their sixth-highest in program history.

The Huskies are back in action noon Feb. 24 in Chicago, Illinois in a head-to-head competition against University of Illinois Chicago.
