Bundle up Huskies and keep shovels and ice scrapers close. Winter storm Harper is moving in from the west where it has left behind winds upward of 160 miles per hour, foot upon foot of snow and dangerous driving conditions. DeKalb is under a winter storm warning until noon Saturday, according to a Jan. 18 updated weather report on The Weather Channel.

Snowfall should start accumulating at 8 p.m. and is expected to continue into Saturday morning. Weather forecasters are predicting between 5 to 8 inches of snow. A possible whiteout is also in effect until Saturday.

The Illinois State Police have some tips on how drivers can stay safe during Harper’s stay. Drivers should make sure to move over and slow down for snow plows that will be out, dress in layers in case of emergencies and should be cautious of black ice.

“The biggest concern about Saturday is the blowing and drifting snow due to the high winds that could reach 30-35 miles per hour. Also, watch out for the coldest temperatures of the winter season following the storm on Sunday,” junior meteorology major Matthew Gontarek said.

Take it easy, stay safe on the roads and enjoy the snowy three-day weekend.
