Ellen Degeneres delivers laughs and heart with Netflix stand-up comedy special

By Amy Geldean

Ellen DeGeneres brought her lively stand-up comedy skills back to the stage Tuesday in her new Netflix special, “Relatable.” After 15 years since her last comedy special, DeGeneres proves she is still fairly relatable as she pulls off something only she can. The amusing yet revealing show focused on DeGeneres’s devotion to overcoming obstacles she has faced along her journey to fame and success.

When she first introduced this special to her friend, he asked her the most important question in all of this, “well, do you think you’re still relatable?” DeGeneres’s friend makes an intriguing point with this.

While she is unreserved about the awards she has won, DeGeneres discusses her difficulty of coming out as gay. Everyone seemed happy and supportive of Ellen at first, but then the unfair backlash came when she lost her sitcom, “Ellen,” in 1998.

She smoothly transitions from one topic to the next with her jokes. She toys around with the idea of fake commercials about “gay,” as if it were a terrible illness. When listing the side effects, viewers begin to sympathize with DeGeneres as she goes into her own side effects. The joke succeeds as the audience laughs along.

In the special, DeGeneres addresses her understandable frustration with coming back on television as she reluctantly becomes more feminine by wearing necklaces and such. The producers were more concerned about her appearance, which is absurd to think since DeGeneres is such an influential figure today.

Ellen successfully connects with the audience as she introduces people to a different and more serious side of her. She balances the humor and genuineness well in her special. Her jokes were constructed around controversial topics, which she navigated carefully.

This special shows how much Ellen will succeed and how many lives she will touch if she continues to go down the path of stand-up comedy .
