Local and scenic pet-friendly nature trails to visit this season

By Sarah Fischer

Attention all pet lovers: Fall is in full bloom, and the trees are quickly transforming into their vibrant reds, oranges and yellows, so it’s time to get out there with your furry friends, and enjoy it before it passes by.

During this season, it’s not enough to take your pets on a quick walk through local neighborhoods. Parks and trails are full of gorgeous autumn scenery, and though there are many picturesque forest preserves scattered throughout Illinois, many are located in the DeKalb/Sycamore area. I’ve explored a few of these charming nature trails with my dog Milo, a 7-year-old terrier-chihuahua mix that doesn’t need much exercise, but thoroughly enjoys the sounds and smells only a nature walk can provide.

Merritt Prairie

DeKalb, IL 60115

Merritt Prairie features grassy pathways that weave through areas with tall plants and forest on either side of you. It can get buggy on a hot or humid day, but on a cool day the bugs aren’t a problem. There are many different species of flowers found as well, depending on how early in the season you visit.

Merritt Prairie is pet-friendly and offers areas for pets to be unleashed but warns about high fines if pets are unleashed in all areas. The paths on the trail open up to wide prairies, some picnic areas can be found and it’s located near a beautiful farm, making it a perfect area for landscape photography. Parking is available at Merritt Prairie, but restroom facilities are not.

Great Western Nature Trail

Sycamore, IL 60178

This Sycamore trail is located directly off Route 64, and you can hear the traffic passing by, so that might take away from the feeling of seclusion. Nonetheless, Great Western Nature Trail is a beautiful pathway to walk. The tree line makes for good shade on a hot, sunny day, and the fine gravel and flat path is an easy trek.

The preserve is pet-friendly as well as open to biking and hiking. Parking isn’t available, but there is a nearby neighborhood about 200 feet away from Great Western Trail with marked parking along the road. Restrooms are not available along the trail.

Greenwood Forest

Dekalb, IL 60115

Greenwood Forest Nature Preserve runs alongside Buena Vista Golf Course in DeKalb between Sycamore Road and First Street. Greenwood Forest is currently under minor construction as they add to the preserve, but it doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of your walk.

The path is a paved walkway, making it easy for running, walking or biking, and during the fall the trees along the trail range from fiery reds to bright yellows. The area is peaceful and lacks busy traffic nearby, though it’s not far from the main roads.

There isn’t much parking available apart from the residential neighborhoods and no known restrooms. There is, however, a small stand near the golf course that sells beverages during the open season.
