Get your colander loser, we’re making pasta! Oct. 17 is National Pasta Day and not only is there an entire day dedicated to this magnificent carb, but October is also National Pasta Month.

For you pasta freaks, this means there’s no shame in having that fourth pasta meal this week. You may ask yourself, “Is this too much?” The answer is: Probably, but going overboard when celebrating national holidays is kind of in our nature… or at least in mine. In any case, the flying spaghetti monster would approve.

To celebrate, you can start by finding your favorite types of pasta. There are over 600 pasta shapes; some of the famous ones include spaghetti, linguine, rotini, macaroni, penne and tortellini. Although the tastes of different pastas are remotely the same, it is one of the most versatile foods in existence. Each shape creates a different texture and can be paired with several combinations of sauces and meats. My favorite shape is penne because the long, tube-like noodle absorbs creamy sauces so well.

Forget visiting those overpriced “authentic” Italian restaurants to get your pasta fix. You can experience the same quality in the comfort of your own kitchen. Pasta recipes are my favorite to cook because the “pastabilities” are endless!

Once you unlock the saucy secrets of each recipe, you can make just about any pasta dish with any noodle. For an example of one of my many pasta sauce concoctions, check out this creamy, tomato-based sauce recipe. Happy eating!
