Former NIU basketball player Darrell Bowie, 24, is in a Romanian hospital after being stabbed in a club Sunday.

Police told the Associated Press that Bowie and Joseph McClain, 25, were attacked Saturday night after a fight broke out in Braila. Bowie and McClain are teammates on local club ACS Cuza Braila in the Euroleague.

Both men underwent emergency surgery, according to a spokeswoman from the Braila County Emergency Hospital, before Bowie was transported to the Emergency Hospital in Bucharest, Romania. The spokeswoman said Bowie suffered multiple abdominal wounds.

A spokesperson for the Bucharest hospital declined to give information on Bowie’s medical status, while Braila police say the event is being investigated.

Bowie played three seasons at NIU from 2012 to 2015 before transferring to Iowa State to play his last season. Bowie averaged 8.3 points per game in 82 career games with the Huskies. The NIU Athletic Department declined the Northern Star’s request for comment.
