DeKalb — The Track and Field team traveled to the University of Illinois Saturday for the Illinois Twilight Meet as it tried to outrun the less than perfect weather. Head Coach Connie Teaberry said she was proud and excited for more things to come from her young team.

“We were really pleased with the ladies’ efforts,” Teaberry said. “It wasn’t the best weather but this wasn’t a shock to them. The ladies really worked hard to execute their races.”

Junior jumper Jehvania Whyte won the triple jump while setting a school record with her jump of 12.98 meters, breaking the outdoor school record for the second time this season.

Sophomore hurdler Remy Amarteifio performed well in the 100-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles, recording a personal record in both events. Amarteifio took home fourth place in the 100-meter with a time of 12.20 seconds, as well as winning the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.67 seconds.

Freshman distance runner Ashley Tutt continued her impressive freshman year with a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:39.86 minutes.

Tutt wasn’t the only freshman to show out in the cold weather as freshman distance runner Sara Atkins placed eighth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:26.30 minutes. Teaberry said the freshmen have continued to grow throughout the season.

“We saw growth with the freshmen indoors going into Indoor Championships,” Teaberry said. “Being outdoors has been a little bit of a give and take. This point in the season, the athletes just get tired.

The Huskies showed out in the 400-meter dash with three finishes in the top five. Senior Doshawn Franks placed second with a time of 56.23 seconds, followed by senior Ashanti Hutton in third place with a time of 56.29 seconds. Sophomore NeShay Curtis rounded out the top five with a time of 57.18 seconds.

Senior thrower Ashley Sicard set a new personal record in the shot put with a throw of 12.55 meters, earning her a sixth place finish. Sicard also recorded a season best throw in the discus at 33.06 meters.

The Huskies have three more meets in the outdoor season before the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships. They will travel to Waco, Texas for the Michael Johnson Classic for an all day meet this Saturday.
