Newspaper Editors as Starbucks Drinks

By Tatianna Salisbury

The news never sleeps and neither do the meticulous individuals who sacrifice their zzz’s to cover it. Read to find out which beverage you before the most like based on your position in the newsroom.

City/Campus News – Black Coffee

The rich aroma of a strong, decadent roast is enough to wake up even the most exhausted of news editors. Sometimes, taking sips of steaming-hot java in between calling potential sources and transcribing board meeting notes is the only thing keeping them awake. Like the coffee they consume, news editors get to the point and give it to you straight.

Perspective – Macchiato

A smooth iced macchiato combines smokey espresso flavors and creamy milk for a refreshing take on a classic creation, just as perspective combines hard-hitting news topics with strong columnist opinions.

Entertainment – Speciality Frappuccinos

Entertainment is as special as Starbucks’ specialty frappuccinos; they’re vibrant, fun and always ready to cover topics in the spotlight. Whether it’s reporting on mystical unicorns or designing christmas tree decor, entertainment slays celebration coverage.

Sports – Iced Coffee

The sports editor gets hot and heavy in the action of NIU athletics and constantly needs to cool off with a cold brewed coffee. There are so many sports, athletes and coaches, it’s no wonder the editor is drawn to a drink that can be ordered in so many flavors. (Or in the case of our sports editor, he just prefers Pepsi)

Digital – Refreshers

Taking passion from the newest trends to fruity refreshers, digital editors brighten the newsroom with their sunny optimism and natural energy. Although they aren’t served with ice, they bring the cold hard truth of current trends to the surface. Whether you want to be very real with your very berry, or sweet and refreshed with your strawberry acqui, digital editors are as cool as their drinks.

Copy – Hot Tea

Whether it’s editing in an oversized sweatshirt and sipping a hot cup of earl grey, or proofing entire pages waiting for the mug of chai to cool, copy editors like to be cozy and collected, just like their drinks. Their calm, composed demeanor mirrors that of the Mint Majesty herbal tea: super chill and caffeine free.

Managing – Latte

The managing editor balances the newsroom and guides the staff, just as dark espresso balances steamed milk for a warm, relaxing afternoon pick-me-up. Iced or hot, each latte is handcrafted and can be spiced up with cinnamon or turned up with a double shot.

Editor-in-Chief – Americano

Espresso shots, hot water and a thin layer of crema is all it takes for the Caffe Americano. Both simple and straightforward in their approach, the Editor-in-Chief and their preferred beverage are rich in flavor and strong-willed. It’s takes a certain dose of caffeine to manage the newsroom.

Visual/Photo – Frappuccinos

Jazzy photos like a java chip or close up caramel shots, the visual editor excels at capturing the unique flavor of every story with their photography skills. Frappuccinos blend a small amount of coffee with a large dose of flavor, just as the photo editor combines the natural beauty of campus with the hard-hitting information of news.
