Huskies notch second place finish

DeKalb — Three Huskies finished in the top 15 as individuals helping the women’s golf team to a runner-up finish Tuesday at the Little Rock/Arkansas State Invitational.

The Huskies had the best score in the field in Tuesday’s final round with a 293, one stroke more than the tournament winners, the University of Texas at El Paso Miners.

“It was a great tournament for us this event,” said Head Coach Kim Kester. “We shot our season low in the closing round which was nice to see. Everyone stepped up to play.”

Freshman standout Lauren Ingle led the pack, earning a fifth place individual finish by shooting 73 in all three rounds of the tournament.

Kester said she was happy to see the consistency of Ingle throughout the tournament and looks forward to seeing her finish out her freshman season strong.

“She has been pretty steady this spring and that continued,” Kester said. “Happy to see her one shot off the lead and have a good tournament.”

Behind Ingle was sophomore Isabella Samudio (78-72-70 – 220) and junior Brielle Ward (71-78-74 – 223), who each finished seventh and 12th place, respectively.

Samudio kept it low this week after shooting at least one round in the 80’s in the last three outings. Kester said Sumudio’s success this week should give her some confidence in her game going forward.

“It shows her she is capable of going low at any time,” Kester said. “She has all the talent to shoot the low scores. Today she was solid all throughout the day and birdied four of her last six holes.”

With only one event remaining before the Mid-American Conference Championships April 20, Kester said the team still has things to improve on, even with four top 5 finishes in the spring season.

Her main point of attention as the season winds down is short game, similar to the way it has been all spring season.

“Long distance putting,” Kester said. “Some of our lags are leaving us tough comeback putts. [We] need to get the lags closer to take make the rounds easier on ourselves.”

The Huskies will be back on the links at the Lady Boilermaker Invitational April 14 in West Lafayette, Indiana.
