SA approves female empowerment club

The Student Association approved the National Association of Colored Women’s Club, a national organization with the motto “lifting as we climb” to encourage women to build up one another.

The organization, which was founded in 1896 in Washington, aims to empower all women.

“There are so many opportunities — network opportunities — for other women, so that sets us apart,” said co-founder Taqori Halliburton, sophomore pre-physical therapy major during the Sunday SA Senate meeting.

The SA Senate also adjusted the SA election timeline to better serve the candidates. The previous timeline did not allot enough time for candidates to gather signatures. The new timeline will provide candidates with an extended campaigning period.

“We want to make sure that these elections are as competitive as possible,” said SA Senate speaker Christine Wang.

A bill was passed for the Senate to be redistricted during elections. Because of changes in the student population at residence halls, Wang said the current districts do not adequately produce voter turnout.

“The population has changed, and the demographics have also changed,” Wang said “Now more people are living off campus, particularly in district three.”

Senators also approved Marisol Valentin as Student Association historian.

Valentin said the archives for SA are accessible but lack clarity and accuracy. Many documents contradict themselves, and there is uncertainty about former presidents and senators.

“SA today is nothing [like] what it was before, and I want to work toward students realizing that SA is here for them,” Valentin said.
