Top 5 Recipes Dorm Room Recipes

By Sara Rasmussen

Question: Do you live a dorm and struggle to satisfy your cravings? I have the perfect recipes for you.

Living in a dorm myself, I know it isn’t easy to find satisfying food that is easy to microwave. You can forget about making a pizza in your dorm completely. There’s typically just a microwave. I’m currently residing in New Hall, which only has two microwaves for 12 people. So, with some searching, here are some of the easiest and simplest recipes for dorm life.

#1:  No Bake Nutella Oreo Icebox Cake

Prep Time: 5 minutes  Cool Time: 3-5 hours (no cooking needed)

Appliances: A refrigerator and a hand mixer (Or a super strong arm)

If you like Nutella, this simple cake is sure to make you go crazy. It’s a creamy texture with a pudding taste. The oreos are soaked quickly in milk, so it’s not too crunchy and the strawberries on top will make you feel like your eating something healthy….hey, with all the homework, you deserve a treat! This dish is perfect for late night study when you just need a little pick me up. Or when you don’t have any ice cream in the freezer and you are in desperate need of something sweet.

#2 Parmesan Garlic Ramen

Prep Time: 15 minutes   Cook Time: 5 minutes

Appliances: Microwave and an electric skillet (optional)

I absolutely love this dish. Pasta is my soulmate and when garlic and cheese are added, as Joey from “Friends” would always say, forget about it. This one is pretty simple. Just make sure you have a decent sized bowl to mix in, or you’ll have a mess on your hands. Instead of the skillet, I substituted it by just microwaving the butter and garlic in a bowl for a few seconds, which turned out well. This dish is perfect for a night where you just want to kick back and watch Netflix or Hulu. Sit back and enjoy.

#3 Apple, Pecan and Feta Salad with Honey Apple Dressing

Prep Time: 15 minutes  Cook Time: None

No appliances needed!

Want a healthy option? This one’s for you. This recipe is good if you want something fresh and good for you. This is a kale salad that will put a pep in your step. Great for a lunch to go, when you don’t want the same boring salad over and over again in the dining hall. Personally, I’m not a big fan of kale or feta for that matter. If you don’t like certain ingredients, change it up! I would do romaine lettuce or spinach with mozzarella cheese instead. Mmmmmm, cheese.

Mmmm, cheese. Need I say more? Mac and cheese is a staple of childhood and this will hopefully make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. It’s perfect for cold or rainy days where it’s just you and you don’t want to get too far away from your homework….or that fun book you just can’t put down. J.K. Rowling is just so good!

#5 Cream Cheese Pizza Dip

Prep Time: 5 minutes or less   Cook Time: 5 minutes

Appliances: Microwave

Growing up, my mother made this dip once a week for dinner. It’s a quick and delicious dish you can turn into anything you prefer. Want bacon? You can put bacon on it. How about veggies? You can do that too. You could even use a white pizza sauce or a bar-b-que sauce if you want to. This is perfect for a party, study group or get together with your friends. My cluster mates loved it, and I hope you do too. It’s best with buttery crackers.
