Night of the Living Drag at Fargo Skate

By Ginger Simons

On Friday night, I had the opportunity to attend Fargo Skateboarding’s “Night of the Living Drag” event. For this glam Friday the 13 occasion, the back skatepark area of Fargo Skate’s store venue was transformed into a performance space fit with lights, sound, and of course, corsets and fishnets as far as the eye could see.

The energy in the room was electric as patrons cheered their way through the routines of each of the drag kings and queens. Many audience members were eager to throw their dollar bills at acts they found particularly impressive, and there wasn’t a dead moment throughout the entire show.

The event was hosted by Chicago drag queen Myss O’Jenny who treated the audience to a couple of her own stellar performances.

Each performer came out onto the stage and dazzled the room with dances, lip syncs and character acting. Some went all out with ferocious, sensual displays complete with death drops and floorwork, while others opted for a more comedic tone. However, what tied each of the acts together was the ever-present spark of confidence, grace and fierceness each performer brought to the stage.

Many of the spectators present also brought their a-game, dressing in elaborate costumes and makeup to take advantage of the night’s self-expressive vitality. While Halloween is regarded as a time to dress up and become someone new, it was apparent that events like this allow for expression of an inner self as opposed to just a costumed character.

At the end of the show, all of the drag kings and queens were called onto the stage for one final round of applause. Myss O’Jenny expressed her gratitude for having such a welcoming, supportive audience.

Upon mentioning the importance of being one’s true self, even in small towns where acts like drag and expressions of unconventional sexuality may be frowned upon, the audience erupted into resounding cheers of agreement.
