Volleyball upsets Western Michigan

DeKALB — The volleyball team upset the Western Michigan University Broncos 3-1 with the help of freshman outside hitter Kaylee Martin taking over with 26 kills, including five straight to close out Wednesday’s match.

The Huskies (7-19, 6-5 Mid-American Conference) obtained a positive conference record for the first time this season after defeating the first place Broncos in four sets (26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23).

“I was excited [and] I had a good feeling about this game going in, especially because [Western Michigan] is leading conference,” Martin said. “I think not getting blocked helps me swing and not be timid and it gave me a lot of confidence.”

The first set was close the whole time with neither team having more than a three point lead. The Huskies scored four of the last five points in the set to get the come-from-behind 26-24 win. Junior middle blocker Meg Wolowicz led the way with four kills.

A service ace from freshman defensive specialist Miranda Karlen sealed the deal for the Huskies in the set.

Martin took over the second set with eight kills, but the Huskies fell 25-23 to even the match heading into the break.

“I’m so proud of [Martin],” Wolowicz said. “It’s really cool to see us all step up as a whole, but I am proud of the way she came out attacking and didn’t let that [mentality] slip away.”

In the third set, Martin wasn’t done as she added nine more kills, putting her running total at 20 on the night. The Huskies were down 18-14 but scored seven of the next eight points to give them a 21-19 lead. NIU held on for a 25-22 win in the third set after a service error by the Broncos.

The Huskies led the fourth set 14-12, but a run by the Broncos gave them a 22-18 lead. A 7-1 run, including five kills from Martin gave the Huskies a 25-23 win in the fourth set and the 3-1 win in the match.

Wolowicz added 11 kills for the Huskies and freshman outside hitter Jori Radtke had 12. Senior setter Chandler Kinley had 56 assists.

“This was a typical battle in our division,” Head Coach Ray Gooden said. “Two teams were going back and forth [and] we were happy to defend home. We want to do our best to get ourselves qualified for the MAC tournament.”

The Huskies remain at home to face the Miami University Redhawks 7 p.m. Saturday at Victor E. Court.
