Five Halloween Movies for Five Different Moods

If You Want to Laugh: “Young Frankenstein” (1974)

Filled to the brim with puns, visual gags and Gene Wilder screaming, this is a perfect movie to put on at a silly Halloween party (or if you’re alone with a bowl of popcorn and in the mood for a laugh). Watching the original Frankenstein film from 1931 is a fun precursor, but not required viewing.

If You Want to be Spooked: “The Shining” (1980)

Heeeeeeeere’s Johnny! Just as fun as it is scary, “The Shining” one is a classic for a reason. If Jack Nicholson’s weird demented stare doesn’t give you nightmares, nothing will.

If You’re Feeling Nostalgic: “Beetlejuice” (1988)

Tons of laughs. Fun 80s special effects. A young, hot Alec Baldwin before he went kind of crazy. ’Nuff said.

If You Want to Cry Into a Bowl of Candy Corn: “Edward Scissorhands” (1990)

Okay, so I know plot-wise, this is technically a Christmas movie, but the visuals and tone give the film a spooky, gothic feel that fits right into the Halloween season. Plus, I feel like any Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration automatically counts as a Halloween movie, regardless of content. Case closed.

If You’ve Got a Whole Night to Kill: “Evil Dead” Trilogy (1981, 1987, 1992)

This is a must-see trilogy for any fan of camp horror. The first installment “Evil Dead” is a genuine horror film that takes itself seriously. However, by the third film, “Army of Darkness,” slapstick gags and cheesy absurdity completely took over. An Evil Dead movie marathon is the perfect way to spend a Halloween night. Just set aside roughly six hours, and you’re all set.
