Ever-changing eyebrow trends

By Lauren Clohessy

When I first taught myself how to do my makeup, filling in my eyebrows was never a thought. Maybe it’s because the natural look was deemed sufficient, or maybe I just didn’t want to join in on the over plucked fad from the 90’s.

Suddenly when I joined more social media platforms in high school, eyebrows quickly became a full-blown makeup trend. People began posting pictures of their freshly waxed or threaded brows and instantly everyone repeated, including myself.

The first time I filled my brows was senior year of high school, with my best attempt to mirror the brows of celebrities like Cara Delevingne and Lily Collins. Their perfectly arched, sculpted and defined thick brows are cherished. Let me say, I’ve met Collins in person and the brows are just as gorgeous and enviable as they are in photos.

Since then, trends have filtered through social media platforms and a new definition of “on fleek” seems almost instantaneous, trying to define which fad is the best is almost impossible because there’s always a new option.

Although the bold brows seem like the classic go to throughout the 2010’s, some trends have tried to break through, but ended up being more of a ridiculous laugh. In early 2017, became a large hit on Instagram and YouTube. People took a tool resembling one a dentist uses to clean your teeth and parted the brow to create a feathered effect.

Although the bold brows seem like the classic go to throughout the 2010’s, some trends have tried to break through, but ended up being more of a ridiculous laugh. In early 2017, feather brows became a large hit on Instagram and YouTube. People took a tool resembling one a dentist uses to clean your teeth and parted the brow to create a feathered effect.

Recently, the wavy brow, resembling a squiggly line, has blown up across news feeds as competition against the feather brow. Yet, just when we think the outrageous trends are over, the new braided brow hit Instagram a little over a week ago, and beauty gurus are already coming up with foolish tutorials to match the fad.
