The women’s golf team earned a first place finish at the Redbird Invitational Sunday and Monday after a score of 73 and a sixth place overall finish by sophomore Isabella Samudio (76-76-73 – 225).

Samudio recorded three birdies on the back nine of the final round to give her a score of 35 on the back nine.

The Huskies (306-309-299 – 914) were the only team to break 300 of any of the 12 teams in the field, and it came in the final round to give the Huskies a one stroke edge over the Bradley University Braves.

“It was a great start [to the season],” Head Coach Kim Kester said. “You can’t win one unless you win [the] first one. It was good to start on a course we know and have had previous success at.”

Competing as an individual, the low score from the Huskies came from freshman Lauren Ingle, who finished fifth place overall for the tournament, led by an opening round of 72 (72-76-76 – 224).

Kester was impressed with the play of her young freshman and said she will be a great player for the Huskies moving forward.

“It was great to see [Ingle] come out and play well,” Kester said. “She played well and it was good to see her get a top-five [finish]. The future is bright for her.”

Other than Ingle and Sumudio, the Huskies had three players finish in the top 15 for the tournament. Sophomore Kelly Anderson (74-76-79 – 229) and freshman Sofia Gomez Enriquez Riart (80-76-73 – 229) finished in the top-10 with junior Brielle Ward (76-81-75 – 232) finishing in the top-15 among 75 players.

After getting their first win in the first event of the season, Kester said the team was excited for the season to start after not playing since April 23 at the Mid-American Conference Championships.

“[The team] was really excited,” Kester said. “Last night we had a good talk and they were just itching to get out there. This group loves to win and they were ready to get out there and start the season.”

The Huskie will pick things back up at the Ball State Cardinal Classic, a tournament where they finished in the top-10 a year ago. Ward finished in the top-10 in the event individually.

The tournament will take place Sept. 18-19 at the Players Club in Yorktown, Indiana.
