DeKalb — It’s important to stay engaged and active in the summer months, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be in the gym. The DeKalb Public Library. 309 OakSt., has fun, interesting and informative events to keep the brain active long after classes have ended. Try out a new class, club or event and check something new off the summer bucket list.

Join a book club

Bookworm bliss at the DeKalb Public Library has three different book clubs to choose from, depending on the genre of choice. Readers who find murder, mystery and suspense thrilling should check out the Crime Fiction Book Club. The club meets 7 p.m. on the third Monday and 2 p.m. the following Tuesday of every month, according to dkpl.org . For readers who prefer odd tales full of ambiguity and intrigue, Off the Beaten Book Club is the best choice. This club meets meet 7 p.m. Thursday’s, according to the library’s website . Fans of current and classic works of fiction and nonfiction will rejoice with The General Book Club, which meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of every month.

Learn a new language

It’s difficult to learn a new language, but it helps to be surrounded by supportive faces. While English is a common language, many people living in the United States don’t speak it fluently, or even at all. Summer English Club meets from 1 to 2 p.m. every Wednesday starting June 28 in the Bilder Family Meeting Room in the DeKalb County Public Library. Together, the club engages in conversation with others who are learning English through as many sessions as they feel comfortable. The club is free and open to the public.

Start a new book

Summer is the perfect time to dust off that old classic sitting on the shelf and give it another read, or check out some new finds and make new favorites. The DeKalb Public Library is stocked with everything from crime mysteries to cookbooks, just waiting to be opened. If it’s the physical trip is too much of a hassle, they offer e-books that can be downloaded on a digital library straight from their website.

Shop local

Farmer’s markets are a great place to explore the world of homegrown produce. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every other Thursday at Van Buer Plaza at North 2nd and Locust St, the Farmer’s market provides a wonderful way to shop for fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables.

If it’s unclear where to start, the library has list of award-winning books ranging from horror to science fiction-fantasy, with convenient links to the award-winners. Whether a seasoned reading professional or a bookless newbie, the library has something for everyone this summer.
