Women’s tennis set for opponent

DeKALB — The women’s tennis team is coming off a successful weekend as it got its first pair of wins since Feb. 11.

The team struggled for nearly six weeks to find success but perservered in a match against conference opponents.

The Huskies (8-10, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) defeated conference teams the Eastern Michigan University Eagles and University of Toledo Rockets. The Huskies look to win their third consecutive MAC match Friday against the University of Akron Zips.

NIU’s duo of senior Adey Osabuohien and freshman Raven Neely has been consistent in winning the No. 1 doubles point. The Huskies hope to continue their recent success in doubles matches this weekend.

Neely also won her third consecutive No. 2 singles match this past weekend. She has been consistent with singles play recently.

Akron (20-2, 4-0 MAC) is undefeated in conference play and is on a 19-game win streak. The Zips have set a new win streak record for their school and have had the upperhand on their oppenents for most of the season.

In their match against the Huksies this past season, NIU was swept 7-0, with five wins coming in singles matchups.

The Huskies have four regular season matchups reamaining and hope to get back over the .500 mark to give themseleves a chance to contend for a postseason spot. The Huskies are currently in fifth place and can jump to third with a win Friday.

The match against Akron will take place 12 p.m. Friday in Akron, Ohio.
