DeKALB — Marijuana is either decriminalized or legal for medicinal use in 28 states and the District of Columbia, but the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB all have yet to acclimate to the times, and continue to ban the substance — even though they allow pain killers to be handed out like candy.

3. Le’veon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers running back

Bell has been suspended by the NFL twice in his four-year career with the Steelers for possesion of marijuana. He was suspended the first two games of the 2015 season after an August 2014 arrest for a DUI and marijuana possesssion. He was suspended another three games, which was originally a four-game suspension, at the beginning of the 2016 season for missing multiple drug tests, and rumors circulated he missed them purposely to avoid a second failed drug test, although there have been no truths to this assertion.

2. Josh Gordon, Cleveland Browns wide receiver

Gordon has been suspended by the NFL in each of the past four seasons with all but one because of marijuana, including his most recent four-game suspension in 2016 after being reinstated into the NFL. Before the suspension ended, Gordon entered a rehab facility, and therefore is still on the suspended list.

Gordon has played only 30 games in the NFL since 2013, but if he can remain sober he could be one of the best wide receivers in the league. Hopefully he can, and hopefully a team will take a chance on the 26-year-old.

1. Stephen Jackson, former San Antonio Spurs forward

While never being suspended by the NBA for his use of marijuana, Jackson said on Michael Rapaport’s podcast “I AM RAPAPORT” NBA players, including himself, like to relax after games and not drink or take pain pills. Stephenson said players would instead rather smoke a blunt and fall asleep.

“A lot of guys do it because that’s the best way to relax,” Stephenson said. “You take so much stuff to get up for the games, and guys don’t like taking all those pills and stuff to heal. Go home, smoke your blunt, man. You’ll sleep good.”

Jackson said he couldn’t speak for other players, but said he would smoke before games, and sometimes he would play well and other times he would have to sit on the bench to calm himself down.
