‘More Life’ reveals emotion

By Darius Parker

Drake’s “More Life” unveils a more passionate yet aggressive side to the rapper through lyrics and melodies unique to this album.

“More Life” was released Friday and has been climbing the charts with tracks dominating the entire top 10 over the weekend. “Glow,” featuring Kanye West, has been the primary victor of the album sitting at No. 1 since the album’s release, according to Billboard Top 200. The album also has features from Quavo of “Migos,” PARTYNEXTDOOR and Young Thug.

With a predecessor as popular as “Views,” Drake’s 2016 album, there is no doubt fans have been anticipating what this project would sound like. A sultry and mellow singing voice coupled with an aggressive rap style delivery combine to appeal to a variety of listeners.

The album’s first track, “Free Smoke,” tells the story of Drake growing up into his own career. Drake mentions how his mentor, Lil Wayne, used to call the shots, but now he is able to decide things on his own. He also details issues of dealing with fame such as the broadened attention he receives compared to the days when he couldn’t get girls to pay him any attention, but now they pay it with no mind. The track also discussed criticism Drake has received and this is where he reverts to the title line saying they can get a “Free Smoke.” Drake uses this song to say whoever has an issue with him is welcome to theri opinion, but should be ready for when he wants to retaliate.

The premier single, “Fake Love,” was released in October of 2016 and scored Drake another No. 1 single. The song has since continued to grow in popularity. Drake tells the story of receiving “Fake Love” from people who are disguised as supporters but are not true friends.

“I’ve been down so long it look like up to me,” Drake raps. “They look up to me. I got fake people showin’ fake love to me. Straight up to my face, straight up to my face.”

The lyrics are smooth and truthful revealing a new depth and an unseen side of a well known artist. Drake really focuses in on his own problems, but does so in a universal way allowing fans to enjoy every moment.

“More Life” has an amazing variety of music, which the rapper is primarily known for. The album has Caribbean-infused sounds as well, similar to the likes of “Controlla” off of “Views.” These tracks feature strong instrumentation that combines jazz and blues. Drake seems to understand what his fans want to hear and with this project he’s hit the nail on the head. Drake combines an equal amount of his aggressive rap style and his softer vocalist side, which is a match made in heaven for his fans. “More Life” gives a new appreciation for Drake’s artistry and writing ability and he makes it clear through his lyrics such as “watch how you speak on my name” that he demands respect.
