Gymnastics announces new recruits for next season

By Tom Burton

DeKALB | NIU gymnastics added new talent to their team during the early recruiting season last week. These recruits will look to complete all four events for the Huskies.

Mia Lord, one of the teams’ recruits, trained in the DeVeau’s School of Gymnastics. Lord qualified for nationals in her first three seasons competing in high school and placed in top 25 nationally in multiple events. NIU head coach Sam Morreale notices Lord’s skill and calls her a, “fun gymnast to watch and [she] should make an immediate impact on making the Huskies better.”

The Huskies also recruited Zoie Schroeder, who ranked second nationally on bars, beam and all-around skill in 2015. Schroeder also started competing as a level-10 gymnast during the 2014 season. Morreale admires Schroeder’s all-around talent, calling her, “a solid all-around gymnast who will make us better on all four events.”

The Huskies will add more talent on the beam with their third recruit in Gabby Welch. She competed as a level-10 gymnast since 2011 and was the champion on the beam in 2014. Welch also earned second place on vault and all-around, third on floor and fourth on bars at the 2016 State Champions.

“I’m very excited to announce these three coming in,” Morreale said. “The all committed a while ago, so we’ve been [very] anxiously waiting on their arrival.”
