First day of MAC Tournament does not disappoint

The first day of the MAC volleyball Tournament did not disappoint as fans at Victor E. Court in DeKalb witnessed a first round upset and a three-set close call for No. 6 seed Toledo.

Western Michigan University Broncos, No. 8 seed, knocked off No. 5 seed, Ball State University Cardinals, in straight sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-17) Thursday. The Broncos were led by freshman middle blocker Quiana Ware, who had a career-high 15 kills in the win. Western Michigan moves on in the tournament to play Bowling Green University 5 p.m. today at Victor E. Court.

Toledo Rockets, No. 6 seed,  survived a close call against Kent State Golden Flashes, No. 7 seed,  that went 5 sets (22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 33-35, 15-11). The Rockets had double-digit kills from four of their starters, junior outside hitter Saige Thomas, junior middle hitter Rachel Vidourek, sophomore outside hitter Gracey Tuifua and Mary O’Connor, senior right side hitter.

Toledo moves on to a second round matchup against Ohio University, No. 3 seed, 7:30 p.m. today at Victor E. Court. The Huskies, No. 2 seed, will play the winner in a semifinal matchup at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Victor E. Court.
