By Northern Star Staff

NIU football finally pulled it together to come up with a great team win on this day in 1992, according to a Sept. 21, 1992 Northern Star article.

Coming off eight consecutive losses, both the offense and defense had an outstanding day blowing out the Arkansas State Indians 31-0. The Huskies were having a rough season so far and hoped the win would turn their season around.

Earning their first shutout of the year, the defense played a hard-fought game. The defense finished with three interceptions, one fumble recovery, and three quarterback sacks. A few key players on defense that had a stand out day were Tony Smith with an impressive ten tackle day and a quarterback sack. C.J. Rose also had a quarterback sack, forced a turnover and ended with four tackles. The defensive player of the game went to Gerald Nickelberry who scored a touchdown off an interception. He also had six tackles, one pass break-up and a fumble recovery.

The offense finished with three touch downs, with one coming from LeShon Johnson, one from quarterback Rob Rugai and another one coming from Brain Steger.

The Huskies would go on to finish the season with a record of 5-6.
