Women’s golf battles in Cardinal Classic

Women’s golf looks to carry last week’s momentum into the Cardinal Classic with 36 holes today and 18 tomorrow in Yorktown, Indiana.

The Huskies are coming off a runner-up finish at the Redbird Invitational last week, where NIU finished the tournament with a team score of 892 and had two golfers finish in the top-10, sophomore’s Kelly Anderson and Brielle Ward.

“It was a great team effort,” said NIU head coach Kim Kester. “We’re going to take a lot of good things from this event and carry it over to the Ball State tournament.”

The Huskies led the tournament going into the final round, but were unable to hold off Boston College, who beat the Huskies by only two strokes overall.

“You think back on the round and you can easily think of 10 shots you could have had back,” Kester said. “Overall, it was a good performance for us so you take away the positives and move on to the next event.”

The Huskies had success in the Cardinal Classic last season, finishing third as a team.

The team had a final round total of 292 and tournament total of 888, both lowest in NIU history.

The team will look to build on that momentum, as they travel back to Indiana for the Cardinal Classic hosted by MAC rival, Ball State University.

Kester noted that the team will make a lineup change going into their next event, as freshman Isabella Samudio qualified for this week’s lineup.

“It’s her first time in the lineup and traveling as a Huskie,” Kester said. “I know the others will help her out with the transition and getting through the first couple of holes.”

Samudio will join a lineup of senior Lena Gautier, junior Andréa Agniel, and sophomores Kelly Anderson and Brielle Ward for this event.
