DeKalb | The 2016 Kishwaukee Festival made its way through DeKalb County — bacon ’n all.

The week kicked off with a movie night in Hopkins Park on July 23, a “Country Music Night” in the Hopkins Park band shell on July 24, “Jazz at the Mansion” at the Ellwood House on Monday, a Municipal Band Concert on Tuesday, a Skateboard Youth Night on Wednesday, the Sycamore Park Concert on Thursday and Farmers Market in DeKalb, the annual parade on Friday, BaconPalooza- Swine and Wine Fest on Saturday and the “Turning Back Time” car show on Sunday.

DeKalb County flooded the sidewalks of downtown DeKalb on Friday for the evening parade. A small block of Lincoln Highway stretching between third and second street was blocked off for the parade. City goers had umbrellas and rain jackets on standby due to a previous flash flood warning earlier that day.

The parade began with local law enforcement flashing their lights and escorting the holders of the “Kishwaukee Fest” sign down downtown DeKalb. Culture, politics and small town shops filled the parade’s lineup.

Miranda Cordes, owner of Dance Dimensions in DeKalb, said this was her second festival she has attended. She also was in the parade with her studio, Dance Dimensions, which is located on the 654 block of E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. “It was busier than last year. It was exciting for the parade to be bigger, with a bigger crowd,” Cordes said.

Cordes said she almost cancelled her studio dancers that were planning on attending the parade due to the weather.

The weather upheld for the entire parade and ended with Santa Claus closing out the parade. The festivities continued on throughout the weekend with BaconPalooza on Saturday in downtown DeKalb, followed by the “Turning Back Time” car show on Sunday to end the over week long celebration.
