Golf tees off in hopes of fifth top-10 finish

Men’s golf will look to continue its recent play as it tees off in the Boilermaker Invitational all day Saturday and Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind., after finishing fifth in the Otter Creek Invitational in Columbus, Ind., last week.

After a fifth place finish at the Hoosier Collegiate, the Huskies will head back to Indiana to take on a similar field of MAC and Big 10 teams they faced last week. Each year, the group has an opportunity to play on the Kampen Golf Course, a location designed by course planner Pete Dye.

“It’s a big golf course, lots of hazards, water and fescue,” said head coach Tom Porten. “It’s a really good test of golf.”

NIU has battled through difficult course and weather conditions the last couple weeks, but the weather looks to be more favorable for this week’s tournament with highs of 70 degrees on Saturday and lows of 48 degrees on Sunday.

“When the weather’s been good there, we’ve had players succeed in the past,” Porten said. “Good weather will yield to good scores and really good shot making.”

Porten said he will keep the same lineup from last week, which consists of junior Joo-Young Lee, senior Jordan Wetsch, freshman Salvador Rocha, freshman Justin Hemings and junior Charlie Cameron.

The Huskies took sixth place at Boilermaker Invitational a year ago, but look to earn another top-five finish this year before heading to the MAC Championship, which begins April 28.
