‘The Girl on the Train’ proves to be thrilling novel, promising film

“The Girl on the Train,” the highly anticipated book-movie adaptation coming out this fall, proved to be a thrilling novel.

The book, written by Paula Hawkins, was published Jan. 13, 2015, and the movie is set to be released in theaters on Oct. 7.

The book does not take the reader for a thrill ride from the very beginning. In fact, it goes rather slow, fully developing each character and his or her story and relationships. The novel is split between three narrators. First, there is Megan, played by Haley Bennett, the girl on the terrace. Megan is a bored and lonely housewife who is married to Scott, played by Luke Evans, but more interested in her therapist, Kamal Abdic, played by Édgar Ramírez. Then there is Rachel, played by Emily Blunt, a broken, lonely drunk and the girl on the train. Lastly, there is Anna, played by Rebecca Ferguson, who is married to Rachel’s ex-husband Tom, played by Justin Theroux.

Rachel is the main narrator, notably drunk the entire time, aiming to cope with the departure of her ex-husband. Every day, Rachel takes the train and narrates life around her. The story picks up and life gets harder as soon as Megan goes missing. Rachel, drawn to Megan’s story, then tries to make sense of this mystery but is too drunk to piece it together. Rachel’s drunken memories could be crucial to Megan’s mystery.

This book has many plot twists and frustrating moments where you find yourself having to pay closer attention, trying to really consider each character’s quirks when contemplating how Megan went missing. This can be fun, but it’s sometimes hard when you’ve got three different narratives to keep up with.

“The Girl on the Train” can be a perfect book for many people — it’s engaging enough to keep up with and the drama takes you to a place that exists only in the world of the book. Hawkins, known for her mystery and suspense, keeps readers guessing about each character.

This is a quick read once you can figure out how each character plays a role in the story. I think this will be one of the more interesting book to movie adaptations this year and I have high hopes the film will be just as thrilling as the book. Not to mention, it has an all-star cast. “The Girl on the Train” is a very developed book with imaginative characters and is such a thrill to keep up with.
