DeKalb bar owners and alcohol vendors asked City Council to amend the municipal code to state that places which serve intoxicating liquors can close at 2 a.m. Thursday evenings.

The previous code stated that the closing hour on Friday morning was 1 a.m., according to a Feb. 11, 1991, Northern Star article.

A letter by DeKalb bar owners was sent, signed and sealed with hopes of extending their business hours on the weekend. The letter also stated, because of the elimination of “happy hours” and the rise in the liquor tax, the bars and stores needed to remain open to make up for lost money.

“The staff really has no significant position to take on the policy. We don’t see this one extra hour a week having any significant impact on the operations of the city,” said Assistant City Manger Gary Boden, according to the article.

The municipal code was amended after the plea from DeKalb alcohol vendors and bar owners. Currently, the hours of operation for every DeKalb bar owner and alcohol vendor allows them to stay open until 2 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
