Women’s tennis back over .500 after big win

Women’s tennis (4-3) picked up a 6-1 win against Chicago State University (0-8) on Saturday, its largest road win of the season.

The Huskies won five of their six matches from singles and the rest from doubles. It was the second straight win for the team on the road.

“I’m proud of the way the team competed in this match,” said head coach Tanya Gombera, according to an NIU Athletics news release. “I think this was one of our best performances of the season so far, and we look to build on this by continuing to improve.”

Adey Osabuohien set an NIU record, winning her seventh straight No. 1 singles match. Osabuohien and partner Cristina Alvarez also won their doubles match.

NIU will matchup against the University of Illinois at Chicago at 11 a.m. Saturday in Chicago.

Singles

No. 1: Osabuohien (NIU) def. Hanna Pangestu (CSU), 6-1, 6-2.

No. 2: Alvarez (NIU) def. Marnie Perez-Ochoa (CSU), 6-1, 6-1.

No. 3: Michelle Erasmus (NIU) def. Leshia Gadacz (CSU), 6-2, 7-6.

No. 4: Monica Pulgar (CSU) def. Abigail Dekkinga (NIU), 1-6, 6-3, 10-7.

No. 5: Evelyn Youel (NIU) def. Bryttish Burts (CSU), 6-1, 6-1.

No. 6: Meghan Montgomerie (NIU) wins by default.

Doubles

No. 1: Osabuohien and Alvarez (NIU) def. Pangestu and Perez-Ochoa (CSU), 6-2.

No. 2: Erasmus and Youel (NIU) def. Gadacz and Pulgar (CSU), 6-2.

No. 3: Dekkinga and Montgomerie (NIU) win by default.
