‘The Shannara Chronicles’ stars feminist character

MTV recently launched a unique fantasy-themed show that uses its characters to promote self empowerment.

“The Shannara Chronicles” premiered Jan. 5 and is based on the bestselling fantasy book series by Terry Brooks. The television series follows a group of heroes across Four Lands. Their mission is to stop an evil demon army from destroying the universe.

Episodes of “The Shannara Chronicles” remind me of “The Twilight Saga” because of the eerie yet beautiful opener and the main characters fighting for a cause. The independence and strength of Amberle Elessedil, played by Poppy Drayton, reminds me of Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart.

The show is action-packed, with each scene keeping you on your toes and glued to the TV. In fact, viewers instantly get a taste of how exciting this show can be when Amberle is viciously chased through a deep forest by her uncle.

This is in preparation for a race, where Amberle will strive to become The Chosen One. As the only female participant in the race, she has to train extremely hard to prove herself to those who doubt her.

Her hard work demonstrates women’s empowerment. The race to become The Chosen One was made up of mostly men, but that did not stop Amberle from competing. This is something all women could learn from: work hard and go after what you want.

“The Shannara Chronicles” focuses on fantasy and action; it isn’t like other shows on the network. The show is targeted towards a much wider audience.
