FEMA: Severe weather expected for Wednesday

By Ashley Morse

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has issued a warning for severe weather for Wednesday.

The predicted weather for Wednesday is heavy rains, strong winds and possible tornadoes, according to a FEMA news release. NIU meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste said the worst of the weather will hit southern Iowa and central Illinois.

“There is a decent chance for [DeKalb to have] a wind gust of 60 miles per hour at around 1 to 2 a.m.,” Sebenste said. “That’s going to be the main threat; however, hail the size of dimes and the threat of a tornado cannot be ruled out.”

In the case of a tornado, people should get indoors and move toward the center of an interior room on the lowest floor, according to FEMA. The following academic and residence halls are tornado shelters:

• Graham Hall

• Jack Arends Hall

• Anderson Hall

• Wirtz Hall

• New Hall Community Center

• Neptune North

• Stevenson Towers
