Avicii’s ‘Stories’ is Hit or Miss

Avicii’s second album “Stories” might not be what you expect.

The Swedish Electronic Dance Music superstar has always pushed the boundaries when it comes to his work. Mainly known for his hits “Levels” and “Wake Me Up,” Avicii constantly blurs the line between electronic music and pop music.

His debut album, 2013’s “True,” upset some of his fans and critics by being heavily influenced by country music. However, the result was unique and memorable. It showed how creative and talented EDM producers really are. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about “Stories.”

The first song, “Waiting for Love,” co-produced by Martin Garrix, is easily the strongest on the album. The rest of the tracks, although featuring several notable producers and vocalists, aren’t as impressive. In an age where EDM is mainstream and DJs are household names, Avicii is trying too hard to separate himself from the pack.

Some of the features include Wyclef Jean, Gavin DeGraw, and Coldplay’s Chris Martin. However, these collaborations are underwhelming, to say the least. Others, like “Broken Arrows” with Zac Brown, actually work rather nicely. Maybe Avicii should stick to country-esque music and EDM instead of searching for the next radio hit.

In fact, some of the album’s songs actually sound like copies of other popular tracks. The melody of “For a Better Day” reminds me way too much of Hozier’s “Take Me to Church,” and the lead guitar in “Trouble” sounds nearly identical to the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris.”

The album is not without its bright spots. “True Believer” is upbeat, classic Avicii music. “Touch Me” and “Gonna Love Ya” would appeal to electronic and pop music fans alike. However, the flaws of this album outweigh the gems.

Overall, “Stories” is a disappointment. It’s not something I see myself listening to, and I know Avicii can do better. Hopefully this talented producer bounces back with his third album after a lackluster sophomore release.
