Letter to the Editor: Northern Star should focus on serious issues

By Stephen Reid

Why doesn’t the Northern Star of 2015 have more articles dealing with the major issues of today?

There is little or no mention of student debt, the outsourcing of American jobs, Wall Street corruption, climate change, the U.S. prison mass incarceration, endless Mideast wars, GMOs, environmental degradation, politicians that attack the social safety net, money in politics, privatization of government services and our military industrial complex.

The Northern Star of the 1960s and 70s was quite different than that of today. It covered stories that were even more important than how the football team was doing.

It helped educate students to other’s points of view and the important issues affecting their lives. As the corporate media has dumbed down the public, one would think that a university paper would try to be more relevant.
