Call boxes working after electrical issue

The emergency call boxes are functional after an electrical issue disabled the system Friday.

Emergency call boxes are blue-lit boxes located throughout campus that students can use to contact the NIU police to request help, report a crime or request an escort, among other things, with the press of a button, according to the NIU Police Department’s 2014-2015 Annual Safety and Security Report. Police increased patrols on and around campus during the two hours the Emergency Call Box system was down, according to an NIU Safety Bulletin.

The call boxes are tested once a month, said NIU Police Chief Tom Phillips in a Sept. 11 editorial meeting.
