Loggins: Women’s soccer in dire need of winning season

By Christopher Loggins

Women’s soccer will face off against Creighton 5 p.m. Friday in Omaha, Neb.

The Huskies have begun the season 1-1, picking up a 2-1 win over Lewis in the season opener and taking a fall to North Dakota in a game of the same score. Creighton enters the game 1-1 after taking South Dakota down in a 1-0 bout and taking a 2-1 loss to Missouri-Kansas City.

The team ended last season with a 6-11-4 record, losing five of their final eight games, and have failed to end a season over .500 since 2008 when they went 9-5-5 and 5-4-2 in the MAC.

The upcoming season will be an interesting one as NIU tries to dismantle its past fortunes and make a name for itself in the MAC West. Not many freshmen are a part of the team, which may be good considering the team has had critical time to build a rapport and chemistry going forward. The team is highlighted by 11 juniors and seniors who will assume their usual roles.

Senior forward Nicole Gobbo will continue leading the Huskies, as she led the team in shots, goals, points and shots on goal last season and has a great chance to do so again. For Creighton, junior forward Lauren Sullivan had a monster year in 2014, leading the Blue Jays in goals and shots, helping lead the team to a 10-6-2 record.

Hopefully the Huskies can turn its last win over Lewis into a winning streak starting Friday.
