Huskie Breakdown Pt. 2: key players for 2015 football

By Christopher Loggins

Offense

Quarterback

2015 marks the first season that redshirt junior quarterback Drew Hare will come into a season as a sure-fired starter. Coming into last season, Hare was battling for a starting spot before earning and maintaining it for the final 12 games of the campaign. The decision proved to be a smart one, as he went on to complete nearly 60 percent of his passes, throwing 18 touchdowns for 2,322 yards and only two interceptions. He also proved to be pivotal in the run attack, running for 900 yards with eight touchdowns and 64 yards per game. There will be no question surrounding the quarterback position this season, and for very good reason.

Tight End

Senior tight end Desroy Maxwell played in all 14 games in 2014, starting in seven, and looks to assume the role again for the upcoming year. Maxwell caught nine passes for 90 yards last season, being used mainly as a blocker in a rush-heavy offense. He still managed to finish sixth on the team in receiving yards, and was a big help in making the run game successful. The Huskies scored 38 touchdowns on 3,488 yards last year. Look for Maxwell to continue to be an important part of the offense as it looks to continue its explosive running attack.

Wide Receiver

Redshirt senior wide receiver Juwan Brescacin has caught six touchdowns in both of his last two seasons, and ranked second on the team in receiving yards last season with 445. Starting in 12 games, Brescacin proved to be consistent as he hauled in multiple receptions in a total of eight games and caught a pass in almost every game he played in. The 6-foot-4, 230 pound receiver had a season high of seven catches and averaged 14 yards per catch. As a veteran in an established offense, Brescacin should be in for another solid year.

Defense

Linebacker

Redshirt senior middle linebacker Boomer Mays started 13 games last year, making solid plays all season and continuing to be a defensive force. He ended the year with 75 tackles, which was good for fifth place on the team. He also made it to the second All-MAC team and had 13 multi-tackle games. Though his numbers were slightly down from his previous season, he still had a great impact and will likely continue to do so in his senior year.

Cornerback

Atop the depth chart for the cornerback position heading into the season is redshirt junior Anthony Brooks, who worked his way into a starting spot last year in the final eight games. Brooks finished with totals of 28 tackles and two interceptions, earning a MAC West Defensive Player of the Week along the way. The season looks promising for him, as he gets a full year in a starting role. Only time will tell what he makes of the opportunity.

Cornerback

Very few defenders have had the impact of senior redshirt cornerback Paris Logan. Starting in all 14 games in 2014, Logan finished the year with 77 tackles, three interceptions, a forced fumble, and 15 pass deflections. His stellar play resulted in first team All-MAC honors. Logan’s consistency has been key, playing in 14 games for three consecutive seasons, and playing across from first string corner Anthony Brooks should only help him more. The two look to be a dominant corner combo and will be sure to give opposing receivers trouble weekly.
