NIU baseball: Huskies beat UIC, end 9-game skid

By Northern Star staff

Baseball wasn’t going to see its season-long losing streak hit double figures.

The Huskies (14-21) put away the Illinois-Chicago Flames (16-13-1) with a decisive 11-4 victory Tuesday at Ralph McKinzie Field.

At the plate

Junior catcher Johnny Zubek led the way for the Huskies offensively, with his first career home run — a grand slam — five RBIs, two runs, two stolen bases and two walks.

The Huskies collected 10 hits and drew eight walks on the afternoon while stranding nine runs on base.

On the mound

Freshman Kevin Jones picked up his first career win for NIU in his first start. He gave up two runs — one earned — while allowing four hits and walking three as he struck out two in three innings.

Freshman Donovin Sims pitched 5.2 innings of relief, keeping the Flames off the board until they put up a two-spot in the top of the ninth inning.

Up next

The Huskies return to action 3:05 p.m. Wednesday at Ralph McKinzie Field against the Bradley Braves.
